The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a state-owned brewery tavern in Munich's Altstadt whose roots trace to a court brewery founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V. The current building, completed in 1897 in the Historismus style, seats over 1,000 guests beneath a painted barrel vault in its main hall. On 24 February 1920, Adolf Hitler announced the NSDAP party programme from that same hall — a fact rarely acknowledged amid the clink of beer steins today. Visitors from around the world order litre-sized Masskrüge of Hofbräu Original while the house band plays Blasmusik and waitstaff in dirndl serve Weisswurst and Schweinshaxe. The courtyard Biergarten offers a quieter escape from the cavernous interior on fine days.
Founded as the ducal brewery in 1589, now a world-famous tavern with steins, pretzels and brass music in the hall.
