Monastery of the Theatines

The Theatine Monastery — known in Czech as the Klášter theatinů or Kajetánů — sits on the Malá Strana slope below Prague Castle and represents one of the few foundations of the Theatine order, a congregation of regular clergy established in Venice in 1524, in Central Europe. Founded in 1671 under Habsburg patronage during the Counter-Reformation, the complex was intended to reinforce Catholic presence in Bohemia through sober yet dignified baroque architecture. Unlike the grander Jesuit colleges nearby, the Theatines favored a restrained facade and enclosed courtyard that give the monastery a contemplative, slightly withdrawn character. Protected as a Czech cultural monument, the church is accessible to visitors while the monastic enclosure remains largely private — an island of quiet amid the busy tourist circuits of Malá Strana.
