Kulturfabrik Moabit

Also known as: Wertheim-Haus, Filmrauschpalast

Kulturfabrik Moabit is a former factory and warehouse building inaugurated in 1911 on Lehrter Strasse, repurposed since the 1990s as a community cultural centre with a cinema, theatre, cafe and event spaces. The yellow-brick complex is heritage-listed and exemplifies the Wilhelmine-era industrial architecture of Moabit, once one of Berlin's densest factory districts. After decades as storage space, neighbourhood activists occupied the building and saved it from demolition. Today the resident-run venue screens arthouse films well off the mainstream circuit, hosts small theatre productions, readings and parties; in summer the leafy courtyard becomes an open-air gathering point for the local Kiez community.
