Mangfall Bridge

Motorway valley bridge on the A8 in Upper Bavaria, successor to a 1936 Reichsautobahn pioneer structure – a landmark of post-war engineering.

The Mangfall Bridge spans the Mangfall valley north of Weyarn in Upper Bavaria, carrying Bundesautobahn 8 between Munich and Rosenheim. The original structure from 1936 was one of the first large bridges in the Reichsautobahn network. Destroyed at the end of World War II, the current 288-metre valley viaduct was built between 1958 and 1960 to a design by Gerd Lohmer and Ulrich Finsterwalder. It is considered a notable example of post-war modernist engineering and was widened to six lanes in the 1970s.
