Peri Bacalari

Peri Bacaları — the Fairy Chimneys — are the defining volcanic tuff spires of Cappadocia, sculpted by millions of years of eruptions followed by slow wind and water erosion. The distinctive cone shapes formed where harder basalt caps protected the softer tuff beneath from wearing away, a geological process particularly visible around Göreme. Several chimneys were hollowed out as dwellings and storage spaces during the Byzantine era, layering human history onto the natural spectacle. The state park charges a modest entrance fee until 7 pm, after which entry is free; walking paths weave directly among the formations. Hot-air balloon rides at dawn, camel and quad tours, and the warm light that floods the valley at sunset make this one of the most photogenic and geologically instructive sites in Turkey.
