Khadija Mosque

The Khadija Mosque in Berlin-Heinersdorf was, in 2008, the first mosque with a dome and minaret in the former East of the city. It was built by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat and financed entirely by women of the Lajna Imaillah organisation, which is why it carries the name of Khadija, Muhammad's first wife and, according to tradition, the first Muslim. Construction was met with significant local protests, turning the opening into a closely watched public event. Today the plain building with its white shaft-like minaret sits between prefab apartment blocks and rowhouses. Visitors can join the annual Open Mosque Day by appointment and share tea with members of the community.
