Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt has been Munich's daily food market since 1807, established by royal decree to relieve the overcrowded Schrannenmarkt at Marienplatz. Across more than two hectares, permanent wooden stalls offer Bavarian cheeses, butcher specialties, fresh produce, and delicacies from around the world. The central beer garden is framed by six fountains bearing statues of beloved Munich folk figures, including comedian Karl Valentin and his partner Liesl Karlstadt. Each spring, the raising of the central maypole transforms the square into a public festival. Open on weekdays roughly from nine to six, it remains a daily gathering point for locals rather than a purely tourist attraction — a working market where Bavarian food culture is still very much alive.
