Olympic Park

Munich's Olympic Park was built on the former Oberwiesenfeld — a rubble field left over from World War II bombing — to host the 1972 Summer Olympics, and it remains one of the most important examples of postwar modern architecture in Germany. Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch's iconic acrylic-glass tent roof, spanning the stadium, sports hall, and swimming hall, was a structural engineering breakthrough at the time and the entire complex is now a protected monument. The park's sporting legacy is permanently shadowed by the September 5, 1972 attack on the Israeli Olympic team, in which eleven athletes and coaches were killed; a memorial on the grounds marks the site. Today the park functions as a year-round leisure hub — open-air swimming, rowing on the lake, an ice rink, and a climbing wall sit alongside the Olympic Hall and open-air stage, which host major concerts throughout the year. The Olympic Tower offers unobstructed panoramic views across Munich to the Alps on clear days.
