outdoor activities
Athens offers a varied range of outdoor activities across the city and its coastline. The Antonis Tritsis Metropolitan Park provides space for walking and wildlife watching, while Pedion Areos serves as a central green retreat. The hill of Lykavitos rises prominently above the urban landscape and rewards those who make the climb. Along the water, Lake Vouliagmeni draws visitors year-round, and the Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre sits right by the sea. Historic sporting venues including Karaiskakis Stadium, Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium and the Peace and Friendship Stadium further reflect the city's long engagement with sport and outdoor life.

Nea Smyrni Stadium in the southern Athens suburb of the same name is the home ground of Panionios, one of Greece's most traditional football clubs. Built in 1939, the all-seat stadium currently holds 11,700 spectators — down from roughly 19,000 before 1998 when full seating was installed for Panionios' participation in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The stadium's attendance record of 20,950 dates from a 1974 derby against Panathinaikos. Eligible to host UEFA Europa League matches, it remains a classic example of pre-war Greek stadium design with a combined athletics facility.
