History in Athens

Athens carries its history visibly across the landscape. The Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum at its foot represent the most prominent layer of the ancient city, while sites such as the Aglaureion and the Amphiareion of Oropos extend that story to the wider region. The neighbourhood of Anafiotika preserves a tangle of 19th-century lanes, and the small church of Agios Eleftherios reveals medieval traces in the city centre. Further afield, Aigosthena and the cape of Agios Kosmas add archaeological depth. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens has long supported the scholarly work that ties all these places together.
