Belfast City Hall

Belfast City Hall is a grand Edwardian Baroque Revival civic building in Portland limestone, completed in 1906 and listed as a Grade A structure — Northern Ireland's highest heritage designation — since 1975. It was built to mark Belfast's newly granted city status and reflects the city's then-booming linen and shipbuilding wealth; just a few streets away, the ill-fated RMS Titanic was being assembled at the Harland & Wolff yards at the same time. The central copper dome rises to about 53 metres and takes clear inspiration from St. Paul's Cathedral in London, making it the defining feature of the Donegall Square skyline. The grand interior and the gardens surrounding the building are freely accessible, with memorials outside commemorating both World Wars and key moments in Belfast's complex political history.
