Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle sits on the southern slope of Cavehill, about four miles from the city centre, and was built in 1879 in the Scottish Baronial style — distinctive for its turrets, corbelled parapets and steep slate rooflines. Originally tied to the Marquess of Donegall lineage and later occupied by the Chichester family, the estate was gifted to the city of Belfast in 1934. The castle carries a charming local legend: good fortune is said to visit the household only as long as a white cat lives on the grounds, and nine cat figures are hidden across the estate for visitors to find. The surrounding parkland connects directly to walking trails leading up to the Cavehill plateau, rewarding with sweeping views across Belfast Lough. Today the castle, listed as a Grade B+ historic building, operates as a venue with a restaurant and event spaces.
