Bright Castle

Bright Castle is a partially surviving tower house near Downpatrick in County Down, Northern Ireland, likely constructed in the late 15th or early 16th century. It belongs to a type of fortified dwelling widespread across late-medieval Ireland. Less than half of the original structure remains: the east wall, roughly six metres long on the exterior, and adjoining fragments of the north and south walls still stand to eaves height, while the western portion has vanished entirely. Evidence of vaulting above the ground floor suggests the structure was once substantially built. Largely off the tourist trail and without visitor infrastructure, Bright Castle survives as a quiet, half-forgotten remnant in the rural County Down landscape.
