Am Hauptbahnhof

Am Hauptbahnhof runs directly in front of Frankfurt's central station, inaugurated in 1888 as a Wilhelminian terminus with a neo-Romanesque sandstone facade and still one of Germany's busiest long-distance rail hubs. The adjacent Bahnhofsviertel developed from the 1970s onward into one of the few places in Germany where open drug consumption was tacitly tolerated for decades — a policy born less from liberal intent than from containment logic. The street today is a dense layering of fast-food stands, budget hotels, sex shops, and supervised drug consumption facilities alongside ordinary commuter infrastructure. Gentrification pressure and ongoing displacement debates make the area a stark, unvarnished lens on urban social policy.
