Brücke Museum

The Bruecke-Museum on the edge of Grunewald in Berlin-Dahlem holds the largest single collection of works by Die Bruecke, the artists' group founded in Dresden in 1905 that, together with Der Blaue Reiter, established German Expressionism. The institution was initiated by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who donated 75 of his own works to the city of Berlin in 1964; the museum opened in 1967 in a sober brick pavilion by Bauhaus-trained architect Werner Duettmann. The collection includes around 400 paintings and over 60,000 works on paper by Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein and Mueller, only a fraction shown at any one time in rotating thematic exhibitions. A walk through the nearby Grunewald forest pairs well with the visit.
