Museum of European Cultures

Also known as: Museum für deutsche Volkskunde

The Museum of European Cultures (MEK) in Berlin-Dahlem is a museum of everyday life run by the Berlin State Museums. It emerged in 1999 from the merger of the Berlin Museum of Folklore and the European section of the Ethnological Museum - a rare combination of folklore, ethnology and European-studies collections under one roof. Its 280,000 objects span the 18th century to today: Swabian costumes, Sicilian marionettes, Erzgebirge nativity scenes, Soviet toys and Turkish wedding photographs from Kreuzberg studios. The permanent show "Cultural Contacts. Living in Europe" is built around migration, religion, consumption and memory.
