Cinema Modernissimo

Cinema Modernissimo is an underground cinema in central Bologna run by the Cineteca di Bologna, one of the world's foremost film archive institutions. The venue sits literally beneath the Via Rizzoli pavement and reopened in 2019 after a lengthy restoration that brought it back from decades of closure. Its programming reflects the Cineteca's archival mission: restored classics, silent films with live musical accompaniment, and international arthouse releases rather than commercial fare. The accessible, below-street-level hall retains a period atmosphere of ornate red decor that nods to early cinema's golden age.
