Palazzo Re Enzo

The Palazzo Re Enzo is a Gothic civic palace built in 1250 on the edge of Piazza Maggiore in central Bologna. It takes its name from King Enzo of Sardinia, the illegitimate son of Emperor Frederick II, who was captured by Bolognese forces at the Battle of Fossalta in 1249 and held prisoner within these walls until his death in 1272 — despite repeated ransom attempts by his father. Legend holds that Enzo made several escape bids, one supposedly concealed inside a laundry basket, but was recognized each time. Designated an Italian national monument, the palace's crenellated Gothic facade and distinctive tower anchor the medieval character of the piazza alongside the neighboring Palazzo del Podestà. The building today serves as a venue for civic events and conferences.
