Verborgene Museum

Das Verborgene Museum — literally 'the hidden museum' — was founded in Berlin in 1987 with a singular mission: to recover and exhibit the work of women artists who had been systematically forgotten despite documented careers in painting, photography, sculpture, and architecture. Its focus fell largely on women born around the turn of the 20th century, among the first to gain access to public art academies, yet subsequently erased from the canon. It was, by its own description, the only museum in the world devoted exclusively to forgotten women artists of the last century. The museum closed on 1 January 2022, but its archival research remains a rare record of how gender and cultural politics shaped — and suppressed — artistic legacy.
