Den Opfern des Stalinismus

This memorial, erected in 1951, commemorates victims of Stalinism at a moment when Stalinist repression was an immediate reality in East Germany. Its combination of bronze, granite, and exposed concrete points to the understated material language common in early postwar commemorative monuments. As a quiet counter-statement to the official memory politics of the GDR era, it serves today as a place of personal remembrance for those subjected to political persecution, deportation, and arbitrary justice under Soviet influence.
