Renaissance-Theater

The Renaissance-Theater at Knesebeckstrasse 100 in Charlottenburg is the only fully intact Art Déco theater in Europe, a distinction that earned it protected landmark status and makes it a singular reference point in European theater architecture. It was designed by Oskar Kaufmann, the Weimar Republic's most prolific theater architect, whose other works include Berlin's Hebbel-Theater and Vienna's Volksoper building. The interior has survived in its original 1920s condition — gilded ornamental friezes, tiered ceiling panels, and warm directional lighting that articulate the Déco aesthetic in every sightline. Operating as a straight-play house without a music stage, the theater maintains a repertoire ranging from comedy to contemporary drama performed by a resident ensemble. With roughly 400 seats, the auditorium keeps stage and audience in close, intimate proximity.
