Schiller Theater

The Schiller Theater on Bismarckstraße 110 in Charlottenburg is one of Berlin's most storied theatrical venues. It served as the Prussian State Theater in the 1920s and 1930s, then from 1951 to 1993 as the flagship of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin, making it a central institution of West Berlin's cultural life. Its closure in 1993 — a budget-driven decision by the Berlin Senate — sparked widespread public protest and remains one of the most contested cultural policy moves of the post-reunification era. The building now functions as an overflow venue for the Komische Oper Berlin while its main house on Unter den Linden undergoes renovation, giving the Schiller Theater a late, if temporary, revival as an active performance space.
