Geburtshaus Konrad Adenauer

Balduinstraße 6 in Cologne marks the birthplace of Konrad Adenauer, West Germany's first Chancellor and one of the principal architects of postwar European integration. Born here on January 5, 1876, the son of a court clerk, Adenauer grew up in a modest lower-middle-class household — an origin that gave little hint of his future stature as 'Der Alte', the elder statesman who steered West Germany into NATO and the European community. The original building was destroyed during World War II and replaced by a postwar structure; a commemorative plaque identifies the site today. It functions as a quiet historical marker rather than a formal museum, visited mainly by those with a specific interest in 20th-century German political history.
