Kölnischer Kunstverein

Founded in 1839, the Kölnischer Kunstverein is one of Germany's oldest institutions dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, and a member of the national association of German Kunstvereine (ADKV). The venue occupies a building designed by Cologne architect Wilhelm Riphahn, whose spare, minimalist spaces serve the work without competing with it. Unlike a conventional museum, the Kunstverein holds no permanent collection; instead it mounts a rotating program of focused solo and group exhibitions spanning painting, video, and installation, often featuring international artists. Admission is frequently free. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm, with closures between exhibition cycles.
