Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz

A central square in Hamburg's Altstadt at the heart of the city's shopping streets – named after playwright Gerhart Hauptmann since 1946, sharing its southern half with the Ida-Ehre-Platz.

Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz is a lively public square in Hamburg's Altstadt district, at the intersection of the shopping streets Mönckebergstrasse, Spitalerstrasse, and Alstertor. It encompasses the northern part of the historic Pferdemarkt and was named in 1946 after German playwright and Nobel laureate Gerhart Hauptmann. The southern part of the square has carried the name Ida-Ehre-Platz since 2000, in honour of Hamburg actress Ida Ehre. Today the square is a central meeting point in Hamburg's inner-city shopping district, characterised by the metro exit, cycle paths, and the buzz of everyday urban life.
