Knez Mihailova Street
Belgrade
The Zeil is Frankfurt's main retail axis, running roughly 1.2 kilometers from Konstablerwache to Hauptwache square. The street's current built fabric is almost entirely a product of postwar reconstruction — the original Gründerzeit streetscape was largely destroyed in Allied bombing raids in 1943–44. Large-format glass-fronted shopping centers now dominate, most notably the MyZeil mall (2009) with its sweeping curved glass façade designed by Massimiliano Fuksas. The Zeil consistently ranks among Germany's highest-grossing retail streets by revenue, drawing millions of shoppers annually to its dense concentration of international chain flagships.
