Granaries at St Elmo

The Granaries at St Elmo — known in Maltese as Il-Fosos — are a series of bell-shaped underground pits carved into the bare limestone bedrock of Valletta's promontory. What visitors see at ground level are the raised circular stone caps sealing the shaft openings, often mistaken for the bases of ancient columns; in reality they are the lids of grain stores constructed by the Knights of St John from the 16th century onward. The chambers were a strategic cornerstone of the Knights' siege-preparedness doctrine, capable of holding enough grain to feed the entire island population through a prolonged blockade. Today the surface is an open paved esplanade near Fort St Elmo, occasionally used for open-air events, with views toward the Grand Harbour fortifications. The site rewards a brief stop for anyone interested in the Knights' military logistics, even if there is little to see beyond the stone caps themselves.
