Bornheim

Bornheim is a Gründerzeit-era residential neighborhood in eastern Frankfurt that has retained an almost village-like character despite its proximity to the city center. Originally an independent village outside Frankfurt's gates, it was incorporated into the city in 1877, and the old village core around the Bornheimer Hang remains legible in the street layout today. Berger Strasse, the neighborhood's main artery, is lined with ornate stucco-fronted tenements, traditional Apfelwein taverns, independent boutiques, and sidewalk cafés that fill up on warm evenings. The weekly market at Merianplatz draws a loyal local crowd. With quiet side streets and several playgrounds, Bornheim is considered one of Frankfurt's most family-friendly quarters — a lived-in neighborhood that sits well outside the usual tourist circuits.
