Torre dei Conoscenti

The Torre dei Conoscenti is one of roughly 20 surviving clan towers still standing in Bologna's historic centre, a quiet remnant of the fierce inter-family rivalries that defined the medieval city. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Bologna counted more than 100 such private towers, built by noble families as status symbols and strongholds in their struggles for urban dominance — earning the city the epithet 'la turrita', the turreted one. Most were demolished, shortened, or absorbed into later buildings over the centuries. This tower is one of the lesser-known survivors, embedded in the dense fabric of the old town with no dedicated visitor infrastructure, and is best appreciated as a streetside trace of the city's competitive medieval past.
