Red Valley Park

Red Valley, just west of Göreme, takes its name from the iron-rich sedimentary rock that glows in deep red and rose hues when caught by low-angle sunlight — most dramatically at sunrise and sunset. The landscape is part of Cappadocia's volcanic tuff formation, shaped over millions of years of erosion into the region's signature fairy chimneys and cliff faces. Off the main trail, the valley conceals Byzantine rock-cut churches and cave dwellings carved during the early medieval period, some still bearing faint fresco fragments and largely unmarked on standard maps. The valley connects via a ridge path to the adjacent Rose Valley, making a combined multi-hour hike feasible with varied panoramic views throughout. The terrain is uneven and steep in places, so hiking footwear is strongly advisable.
