Red Valley

Red Valley is a deeply carved tuff canyon on the edge of Göreme in the heart of Cappadocia, named for the iron-oxide flush that sets the volcanic rock glowing crimson at sunset. Millions of years of wind and water erosion have sculpted the soft tuff into towers, chimneys, and sheer cliff faces that visitors consistently describe as otherworldly. Cut into the canyon walls are several Byzantine rock-cut churches from the 10th and 11th centuries, some retaining frescoes, most unmarked and well off the main tourist circuit. The classic route links Red Valley with the adjacent Rose Valley in a roughly 9-kilometre loop; fixed-rope climbing sections and steep, powder-soft slopes demand proper hiking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness. The trail receives far less foot traffic than nearby Göreme Open-Air Museum, making it one of the more solitary hiking experiences in the region.
