Villa Rustica (Kloten)

The Aalbühl near Kloten, colloquially known as the «Schatzbuck» (treasure hill), is the site of a Roman villa rustica — a rural farming estate from the period when the region formed part of the Roman province of Germania superior. Such estates, typically active between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, were the agricultural backbone of Roman settlement in the Swiss Mittelland. No standing structures remain visible today; knowledge of the site derives from archaeological excavations and surface finds. The folk name «Schatzbuck» reflects a widespread local tradition of treasure legends attaching themselves to Roman ruins.
