Arbenhorn

The Arbenhorn — known in French as Mont Durand — is a 3,713-metre alpine summit in the Swiss canton of Valais, straddling the linguistic divide between the German-speaking Mattertal near Zermatt and the French-speaking Val d'Anniviers above Zinal. This placement makes it one of the rare Walliser peaks officially mapped under two names on Swiss national cartography. Sitting immediately west of the Ober Gabelhorn along the high frontier ridge, the ascent crosses glaciated terrain and demands solid alpine experience. The reward is a quiet summit panorama across the Valais four-thousanders, well away from the busier routes around the Matterhorn.
