Allalinhorn

The Allalinhorn (4,027 m) in the Walliser Mischabelkamm is one of the most frequently climbed four-thousanders in the Alps, and its accessibility is the reason why. The Metro Alpin — one of the world's highest underground funicular railways, with its top station at 3,457 m — cuts the remaining ascent to roughly two hours from the terminal. Yet the standard route up the Hohlaubgrat ridge remains a genuine high-alpine undertaking: crampons and ice axe are required, and crevasses in the Allalin Glacier hide beneath the snowpack. The summit rewards climbers with a panorama stretching across more than 40 Valais four-thousanders, from Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn to the Dom, the highest peak entirely within Switzerland. In winter and spring the slopes below the cable-car station form part of the Saas-Fee ski area.
