Balfrin

The Balfrin is a 3,796-metre summit in the Valais Alps, the highest point of a ridge running from the Seetalhorn above Grächen to the Riedpass. Its defining quality is its forward position in front of the far more celebrated Mischabel massif: from the summit, the Dom — the nearest four-thousander at roughly 6 km — and the full Nadelgrat chain are visible without obstruction. The standard ascent is a glacier tour approached from Grächen or Saas-Balen, requiring basic alpine and crevasse-travel experience. Sitting well outside the tourist circuits of Zermatt and Saas-Fee, the Balfrin rewards experienced mountaineers with solitude and a sweeping high-alpine panorama.
