Eiserner Steg

The Eiserner Steg, completed in 1869 as Frankfurt's first pedestrian-only bridge, was an early experiment in private urban infrastructure: shareholders financed construction and toll fees paid it back. The wrought-iron suspension structure was badly damaged in World War II and rebuilt in its current form in 1952, faithfully replicating the original silhouette. The bridge offers one of Frankfurt's most recognizable vantage points — the banking district's glass towers to the north, the Gründerzeit museum embankment to the south. Thousands of love locks line the railings, a phenomenon city officials have occasionally debated but never dismantled.
