Frankfurt Central Station

Frankfurt Central Station, opened in 1888, ranks among Europe's largest terminus stations and stands as a late-Wilhelmine showcase of historicist architecture. Its three-nave steel-and-glass roof spans 185 meters — an engineering sensation at the time of its opening and one of the boldest railway construction feats of 19th-century Europe. The imposing sandstone facade was shaped at the behest of Kaiser Wilhelm II to embody the economic ambitions of the German Empire. With over 450,000 daily passengers, the station remains one of Germany's busiest rail hubs, yet its original train-hall structure survives largely intact — a rare, full-scale artifact of Victorian-era railway engineering still in active daily use. Looking up at the roof trusses from the platform reveals the constructive ambition hidden behind an otherwise routine commute.
