Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters in Lisbon is a unified campus of museum, concert hall, and landscaped garden completed in 1969 by architects Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid, and Ruy Athouguia. The foundation was created by the will of Armenian-British oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, who bequeathed his entire fortune and art collection to Portugal upon his death in 1955 — the collection spans ancient Egyptian artifacts, Islamic manuscripts, Flemish masters, Impressionist paintings, and René Lalique glassware, making it one of the most eclectic private collections in Europe. The building is a landmark of Portuguese 1960s modernism: raw concrete volumes dissolve into a public garden of planted terraces and reflecting pools that Lisbonites use daily as a green retreat. The complex also houses the Centro de Arte Moderna and a concert hall with a year-round classical music programme.
