December Murders Memorial

Fort Zeelandia in Paramaribo marks the site of the 1982 December murders, when 15 Surinamese citizens were killed under the Bouterse military regime. Today it serves as a museum and place of remembrance.

The December murders refer to the torture and killing of 15 prominent Surinamese citizens — journalists, lawyers, trade unionists, and military men — on 7 and 8 December 1982 at Fort Zeelandia in Paramaribo. The victims were taken from their homes before dawn by soldiers loyal to military dictator Dési Bouterse, subjected to a mock trial, and shot dead. The killings prompted the Netherlands to suspend development aid and drew widespread international condemnation. Fort Zeelandia, where the murders took place, now houses a museum and memorial. In 2019, Bouterse — then still serving as president — was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison, though enforcement remained contested.
