Sachsenhausen

Sachsenhausen sits on the south bank of the Main and has been Frankfurt's most storied drinking and dining quarter for centuries. Its identity is inseparable from Apfelwein — tart cider served in earthenware Bembel jugs at traditional Strausswirtschaften, which hang a pine wreath above the door to signal they're open. The quarter's half-timbered alleys around Klappergasse and Schweizer Strasse retain much of their Gründerzeit and older building fabric despite rising rents. The riverside promenade on the Sachsenhausen side offers a continuous walking and cycling path with a direct view of Frankfurt's skyline, particularly striking at dusk.
