Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum Berlin

Also known as: Gas Lantern Open-Air Museum Berlin, Museum of Gas Lamps

The Berlin Gas Lantern Open-Air Museum at the south edge of the Tiergarten is the world's largest open-air collection of historic street lamps, set up in 1978 when Berlin began phasing out its gas-lamp network. Around 90 lights from cities including Amsterdam, The Hague, Frankfurt, Dresden, Prague, Copenhagen and Vienna stand scattered between the trees along Joseph-Haydn-Strasse. Lamps light automatically at dusk and throw a soft yellow glow that contrasts sharply with the cold LED of modern Berlin. With the city actively dismantling its remaining gas lanterns, the future of the museum itself is uncertain. Entry is free; best visited at dusk in autumn.
