Kant-Garage

The Kant-Garagen at Kantstrasse 126/127 in Berlin's Charlottenburg are the only surviving interwar multi-storey car park in Berlin and Brandenburg and the oldest in Europe with a double-helix ramp. Built between 1929 and 1930 by Hermann Zweigenthal, Richard Paulick and engineers Louis Serlin and Kurt Berndt, the structure offered 300 parking spaces on five floors. It is the only multi-storey car park in the world with an original steel-and-glass curtain wall and counts as a pioneering building of the Neue Sachlichkeit. After decades of decay it was listed in 2018 and reopened in 2024 as an office and event venue. Architecture fans now study the spiral ramps inside that still breathe Berlin's early automobile age.
