Karpfenwinkel mit Streuwiesen am Starnberger See

The Karpfenwinkel nature reserve sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Starnberg, spanning the municipalities of Tutzing and Bernried in Upper Bavaria. Designated in 1985, it forms part of both the European Habitats Directive (FFH) network and the EU Special Protection Area for birds known as "Starnberger See". Its core habitat is a rare type of low-nutrient meadow — Streuwiesen — kept open by traditional single-cut mowing and home to specialized plants such as purple moor grass. The transition from shallow lakeshore to fen and meadow creates a critical stopover for wading and water birds on the Alpine foothills migration corridor. Narrow footpaths trace the shoreline with unobstructed views toward the Alps, offering a quiet, largely undeveloped alternative to the busier stretches of the lake.
