Buchheim Museum der Phantasie

The Buchheim Museum of Imagination sits directly on the western shore of Lake Starnberg in Bernried, housing the collection of Lothar-Günther Buchheim — the author of the war novel 'Das Boot'. The core of the collection is one of Germany's most significant private holdings of German Expressionism, featuring works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, alongside Upper Bavarian folk art and naïve painting. Buchheim began collecting systematically in the postwar decades before formalizing the institution in 1998. The museum building, clad in wood and integrated into the forested lakeshore, frames panoramic views across the Starnberger See. Open Tuesday through Sunday and public holidays, April through October, with full wheelchair accessibility.
