Salt Pans

The Salt Pans are shallow basins carved directly into Malta's pale limestone shoreline, used for centuries — possibly since Phoenician times — to harvest sea salt through natural evaporation. The resulting grid of rock-cut pools, each no deeper than a few centimeters, creates an almost otherworldly geometric pattern along the waterfront. Visitors can descend steps from the promenade to walk among the pans themselves, and the calmer rock pools nearby are popular for swimming, with ladders into the water spaced every few metres. The site looks markedly different throughout the day: at midday the salt residue shimmers white against the blue sea, while late afternoon brings a warm coastal breeze and long shadows across the rock.
