Tarxien Temples

Also known as: Ħal-Tarxien Prehistoric Complex

The Tarxien Temples, tucked into a suburb just south of Valletta, are among the oldest freestanding stone structures on earth — built between roughly 3250 and 2500 BCE, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The complex comprises four interconnected temples from Malta's Temple Period, with carefully dressed limestone blocks decorated in geometric spiral reliefs and figurative carvings. Most striking is the lower portion of a colossal statue — its original now in the National Museum of Archaeology — considered the oldest monumental sculpture known from the Mediterranean world. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 as part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta. Today the open-air complex is well equipped for visitors: an audio guide, informational signage, a small ticket-and-shop kiosk, and full wheelchair accessibility make it an accessible window into Malta's deep prehistoric past.
