Augusta Antik Kenti

Augusta Antik Kenti is a Roman-era city near Adana founded by Emperor Augustus in honor of his wife Livia, established between the 1st century BC and 28 AD and originally known as 'Livia Augusta'. When the Seyhan Dam was completed in 1955, the site was deliberately submerged beneath the reservoir, effectively removing it from public access and organized archaeological study. During periods of low water, scattered remnants — stone rubble, partial walls — re-emerge from the waterline, drawing curious visitors from the surrounding region. Reaching the ruins is no easy task: much of the site sits on a flooded peninsula accessible only by boat. The result is less a conventional dig site than a quietly tragic reminder of how 20th-century infrastructure projects could permanently erase ancient urban history.
