Brahan Castle

Brahan Castle, situated about 5.6 km southwest of Dingwall in Easter Ross, is the ruin of a once-substantial Scottish country house that served as the seat of the Earls of Seaforth, chiefs of Clan Mackenzie. The site is inseparably linked to the legend of the Brahan Seer — Coinneach Odhar, a 17th-century Gaelic prophet said to have served on the estate before Lady Seaforth ordered his execution for his unsettling visions. His dying curse allegedly foretold the total extinction of the Seaforth line, a prophecy that Highland tradition holds was fulfilled in the early 19th century. Little of the original structure survives today, leaving scattered masonry set within a parkland landscape typical of the Scottish Highlands. The combination of clan history, Gothic legend, and atmospheric decay gives Brahan a distinctly melancholy presence.
