A' Chailleach

A' Chailleach — Gaelic for 'The Old Woman' — is a 930 m Munro sitting on the southern fringe of the Monadh Liath, a broad plateau of Highland moorland roughly seven kilometres northwest of Newtonmore in the Spey valley. The name draws from Gaelic mythology, where the Cailleach is a divine hag associated with winter storms and the sculpting of mountain landscapes. The ascent crosses open blanket bog and rounded ridgelines characteristic of the Monadh Liath — less jagged than the Cairngorms to the east but rewarding with wide, uncluttered views across the central Highlands. Hillwalkers frequently combine it with neighbouring Carn Sgulain to bag two Munros in a single outing.
