Am Faochagach

Am Faochagach is a 953 m Munro and Marilyn in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, situated roughly 25 kilometres east of Ullapool in one of the country's most remote stretches of open moorland. The mountain's Gaelic name is etymologically contested: older maps recorded it as Am Fraochagach, meaning 'place of the heather', which fits the dominant vegetation; however, distinctive solifluction terraces on the eastern flank create rib-like ridges strikingly reminiscent of shell corrugations, lending equal plausibility to the 'place of the shells' interpretation. The ascent follows no marked path, crossing open heather and peat bog, and demands confident map-and-compass navigation. The summit rewards with unbroken views across the uninhabited Highland interior — a landscape of lochs, bog and silence rarely interrupted by other walkers.
